Why this tool exists

A larger salary can still leave a household with less room each month after taxes, rent, commuting, and ordinary spending change. Job-offer conversations often focus on the annual headline while the relocation decision is lived one month at a time. TOOOLBOX MOVE was built to put those moving parts into one comparison.

The free calculator asks for the values that belong to your decision: current and proposed salary, locations, housing, and recurring spending. It then estimates after-tax pay and a break-even salary. The result is a structured scenario, not a recommendation to accept or reject a job.

What makes the output useful

The calculator separates user inputs from public benchmarks. Your salary, rent, and spending remain visibly yours. Census and BLS figures provide broad regional context; they do not replace a lease quote, payroll estimate, or local research.

Every result should be traceable to an assumption. If changing rent or spending materially changes the decision, that sensitivity is more important than a city ranking. The methodology page explains the calculation order and the items the model does not include.

Decision first

The product starts with a specific job offer and move, not a generic list of the best cities.

Inputs stay visible

Salary, rent, and spending assumptions are shown so the result can be challenged and rerun.

Limits are part of the result

Local taxes, benefits, debt, childcare, insurance, and moving costs may require separate work.

No paid ranking

Employers, cities, apartments, and moving providers cannot pay for a better calculator result.

Operation, review, and corrections

TOOOLBOX MOVE is operated as part of the TOOOLBOX network. Tax rules and public datasets are reviewed when the model is updated, and material limitations are documented rather than hidden behind a precision-looking number.

Automated city and comparison tables are kept out of search during the current quality review. They remain product references while each page is evaluated for distinct analysis. Corrections should include the page, city pair, input values, displayed result, and the official source when the issue depends on public data.
